The light novels published byShufunotomo, written byNatsu Hyuugaand illustrated byTouko Shino, follows a girl with medical knowledge who becomes a food taster for an emperor's consort. The book series, published under the labelHero Bunko, started in 2014 and has 13 volumes as of February 2023. J-Novel Club describes the plot as:
In the east there is a land ruled by an emperor, whose consorts and servants live in an extensive complex known as the hougong, the rear palace. Maomao, a simple girl raised in a humble town by her apothecary father, never imagined that the rear palace would have anything to do with her, until she was kidnapped and sold to serve there.
Although she appears ordinary, Maomao has a quick wit, a sharp mind, and extensive knowledge of medicine. That is her secret, until she encounters a resident of the palace at least as perceptive as she is: the chief eunuch, Jinshi. He sees through Maomao's facade and makes her lady-in-waiting to none other than the Emperor’s favorite consort... so that he can test the poison in the lady’s food! Before the light novel series, a single volume of tankoubon was published under the labelRay Books(also fromShufunotomo Infos) in 2012. The light novels have inspired a Manga published bySquare EnixbyNekokurage(also available in English) and a manga published byShogakukan(subtitledMao Mao no Kōkyuu Nazotoki Techou) byMinoji Kurata.
