The Fall of a Kingdom and the Rise of a Duke

Legend tells of a tyrannical king whose cruelty and madness slowly but surely drove his own kingdom into ruin. The devastation was so profound that a new leader rose to seize the throne, determined to rebuild the land into a sanctuary where justice and balance finally reigned.

Duke Eli, a legendary knight whose sword helped change the fate of countless lives, earned his title through blood and merit in this revolution. Yet, despite his military glory, two pressing duties remain unfulfilled: marriage and stability for the people under his rule. He believed the first task was settled; he had set his sights on a nobleman’s daughter whose beauty and status seemed a perfect match. However, as if guided by the fickle hands of fate, he is instead sent a different woman—a mere maid named Edna, who carries a past more complex and dangerous than anyone could imagine. Will Eli accept this newcomer who arrived in another's place? And how will a woman with such heavy secrets fare under the immense pressure of the Duke’s household?

First Impressions and World-Building

I would like to preface this by saying I liked the story. I think the main plot and most of the subplots are pretty interesting. From the very beginning, it features a couple of twists I wasn’t able to predict straight away, which kept me engaged. In truth, I feel like everything other than the romance works for me. The lore within this world has structure and, thanks to a certain level of mystery, I think most readers will find this enjoyable. Besides the lore, there’s political intrigue, drama, and schemes that add more depth to the overall story.

The Complexity of Edna’s Mother

I think one of the most well-developed and interesting characters is Edna’s mother. We see her from the moment she’s bought by the king. She had to deal with a lot of negativity since he became a drunkard and an abusive, tyrannical person. What’s interesting about this character is that she learned quickly; she knew what she didn’t want in life yet couldn’t escape it… or did she? In fact, she did not, but with her knowledge, she managed to do what others couldn’t, which was to raise her own daughter as a boy to protect her from the evil she experienced from a young age.

Some people might refer to her as selfish, and I agree somewhat, but what else could she have done? Queens, it seems within this world, don’t hold the same power as a king, and the king at that point was a predator. The stakes were out of this world regarding her child’s safety, so she decided to disguise the baby as a boy to ensure survival. She was so determined to make this plan work that she killed almost all the maids that assisted her during the birth. You have to admire that commitment because only extremely desperate people would take such measures, and this character in particular was willing to do it.

The Vision of Paradise: Eden

So, while Edna’s mother is selfish, she’s also a strategist. Her grand plan was to wait for Edna to inherit the throne and turn the whole kingdom around. We’re not only told this from her perspective, but as additional evidence, we have Edna’s boy name which is Eden. This name is important because it means paradise; her mother was attempting to create that paradise she envisioned through her daughter. And they almost did. Almost. Because what happens when you have a monster for a king? People want to rebel, and so some knights decided to unite forces and bring him down.

Of course, there wasn’t any way for them to know about the mother's intentions. When they attacked, they weren’t going to risk leaving the heir of a monster alive. That’s what Edna’s mother thought, too, and so she made the ultimate sacrifice of burning the palace after saving her daughter and telling her to run and live a full life.

The Replacement Bride and Duke Eli

That’s what Edna started doing, living a life as a woman. But life as a woman wasn’t easy because she’s taken by a royal as a servant and their treatment towards her was questionable at best. One of those royal’s daughters is requested as a wife for a duke, but this duke isn’t like most because he’s actually a low-born guy who became a Duke after going to war. Having a low-born man as a husband was unsightly for the family, and that’s when they sent Edna with the hopes Eli could be easily fooled.

Duke Eli isn’t fooled, of course, but he still takes this woman as his wife because he finds her intriguing and can see through her façade. She’s determined and doesn’t shy away from speaking out or commanding others when needed. He even mentions he doesn’t care about Edna’s past, but how would he react knowing that she was that heir that wasn’t supposed to survive? Will Edna’s actions speak louder than words or will miscommunication and assumptions get the better of them?

Publicidad

I’ve read the first half of this story, around 53 or so chapters, and while I want to keep reading to answer these questions, I also need to mention the weakest point: the romance. First of all, Eli is not particularly handsome or well-spoken; sometimes he reads like a secondary character, and that first intimate scene between them made me want to throw up. We’re talking about dub-con/non-con territory here, and what ensued was a romance that, although it went beyond looks, still read shallow and rushed.

Eli likes Edna’s characteristics that make her a great leader, but he also likes how sweet she is. Similarly, Edna likes Eli’s tough exterior but softness and hardworking ethic. It sounds sweet, but I just don’t think Eli as a character is developed enough to create an impact on the readers when he begins to change.

Edna: A Masterfully Written Lead

You see, Edna is more of a complex character which I appreciate. She comes from a damned lineage where she had to hide who she was, she has survivor’s guilt, and she has a hard time figuring out who she really is—a prince, a princess, or maybe a little bit of both? She was definitely written with love and thought unlike many other characters.

Opinions about Light and Shadow

I’ll admit that we don't know the past of many secondary characters yet, and my opinions might change because sometimes it takes a flashback scene to give that richness to a character. My critique is not meant to be harsh, but just more of a feeling I’m experiencing. So what do I expect for the rest of the story? I expect development, especially for the main male character. There’s an interesting storyline involving the past that might create trouble for our main characters. I'm looking forward to seeing Edna dealing with her father’s past and sins, and how that takes shape and affects everything.

p.s.: was anyone else mad when Edna had to cut off her hair? No? Just me? Ok.
